Lee Wittenburg kindly provided this account of his efforts in getting noweb working on a DOS machine using the MKS toolkit. 1. All the shell scripts without an extension required a .KSH. The makefile, of course needed to be changed accordingly. Also, the normal .o to .obj and to .exe was necessary in the makefile. No other changes were necessary, except minor ones due to bugs in MKS make. 2. Rename INSTALL to INSTALL.NIX to keep make from getting confused. 3. I changed all references to "nawk" to "awk". 4. There is a bug in MKS Awk that requires a couple of changes in NOWEAVE. There's a problem with backslashes in the 2nd argument to gsub() that requires a couple of changes to NOWEAVE. The lines gsub("\\\\", "\\\\", line) gsub("{", "\\{", line); gsub("}", "\\}", line) need to be gsub("\\\\", "\\\\\\", line) gsub("{", "\\\{", line); gsub("}", "\\\}", line) I've reported this bug to MKS (when I first found it in version 3.2), but it still hasn't been fixed. It's not a NOWEB bug, but MKS Awk NOWEB users need to know about it. 5. MKS Awk is POSIX compiliant with regard to regular expression syntax; Unix Awk isn't; GNU Awk swings both ways (I believe); other Awks I couldn't say about. This causes a problem ONLY in NOXREF. I had to change the line gsub(/[\[\]\\{} -]/, "*", key) to gsub(/[[\{} -]|\]/, "*", key) which probably won't work on a Unix Awk. There's likely to be a Unix/POSIX discrepency in Awks for quite a while.
